Former Albanian Guerrillas Released From Prisons

-Some 3,000 former National Liberation Army (UCK)
rebels will be pardoned, including some 250 people
already prosecuted in criminal courts.

SKOPJE, Mar 13, 2002 -- (dpa) A first group of
imprisoned former ethnic Albanian rebels was released
in Macedonia, as police reported increased number of
celebration shootings in former crisis regions
Tuesday.

Some 28 former National Liberation Army (UCK) rebels
were released from prisons and detention centers by
the midnight Monday, as Macedonian authorities started
a wide amnesty for former guerrillas.

According to the Amnesty Law, approved by parliament
last Thursday, some 300 ethnic Albanian rebels should
be freed immediately.

The amnesty law is considered a key point of the Ohrid
peace agreement signed last August, which ended a
six-month ethnic Albanian insurgency.

Some 3,000 former National Liberation Army (UCK)
rebels will be pardoned, including some 250 people
already prosecuted in criminal courts.

However, the release of rebels from prisons was
followed by the increased level of shootings in former
crisis regions.

Police reported that some 130 shots and 80 flares were
fired around Tetovo late Monday.
