AFP. 13 March 2002. North Korea slams US nuclear strategy. SEOUL -- North Korea on Wednesday threatened to take "strong" countermeasures over a reported US nuclear strategy which targets seven countries -- including the communist regime -- for possible attacks. In the North's first reaction to leaks of the US military policy review, the North's official Korean Central News Agency accused Washington of pursuing "nuclear blackmail." "The DPRK (North Korea) will not remain a passive onlooker to the Bush administration's inclusion of the DPRK in the seven countries, targets of US nuclear attack, but take a strong countermeasure against it," it warned. "This indicates that the Bush administration is working in real earnest to prepare a dangerous nuclear war to bring nuclear disasters to our planet and humankind," KCNA said. The state agency blasted the reported US strategy as an "inhuman plan to spark a global nuclear arms race and bring the political and military situation in the world, including the Korean peninsula, to an extreme pitch of tension." "If the US intends to mount a nuclear attack on any part of the DPRK just as it did on Hiroshima, it is grossly mistaken. A nuclear war to be imposed by the US nuclear fanatics upon the DPRK would mean their ruin in nuclear disaster," it added. On Wednesday, Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the North's ruling Workers' Party, denounced a week-long military exercise to be held by US and South Korean troops from March 21 as "a test nuclear war." "The projected joint military exercise ... is prelude to a very dangerous war of aggression aimed to plunge the Korean nation into a scourge of a nuclear war," Rodong claimed.
