Ananova. 13 March 2002. Bush 'does not recognise flawed Zimbabwe
election.'

WASHINGTON -- George W Bush [of all people] says the US does not
recognise Robert Mugabe's "flawed" re-election, adding to international
condemnation of the result.

He says the US is now in talks with its allies over how to respond to
the poll, which Zimbabwe's opposition has denounced as "a fraud."

Mr Bush's refusal to acknowledge the result came after Colin Powell
bluntly warned Mugabe that he "may claim victory but not democratic
legitimacy."

The election saw Mugabe given another six-year term with 54% of the
votes, compared to opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai's 40%.

"We do not recognise the outcome of the election because we think it is
flawed and we are dealing with our friends because we are figuring out
how to deal with this flawed election," said Mr Bush.

Patrick Chinamasa, justice minister in Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF government,
says it was a "runaway victory" for the president, won on the back of
Mugabe's policy of seizing white-owned land and turning it over to
landless blacks.
