Poland Vows Full Support for Ukraine's NATO, EU
Aspirations

WARSAW, Mar 14, 2002 -- (dpa) NATO member Poland
Wednesday called for its strategic partner and
neighbor Ukraine to be invited by the alliance to
participate in its Prague summit on enlargement this
November.

Polish Foreign Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz
Wednesday in Warsaw made the call for Ukraine's
attendance at the upcoming NATO summit after talks
with his visiting Ukrainian counterpart Anatoli
Zlenko.

Zlenko did not rule out "political decisions" which
could bring Ukraine "closer" to NATO in the future.
The ex-Soviet state is currently a NATO partner,
primarily in close cooperation with Poland.

Cimoszewicz also stressed that European Union hopeful
Poland fully supports Ukraine's aspirations for EU
associate status. Poland itself hopes to join the bloc
by 2004.

Both ministers vowed to do everything possible to
minimize the impact of a planned Polish visa regime on
the mobility of Ukrainian citizens. In accordance with
EU norms Poland will impose visa requirements on
Belarussians, Ukrainians and Russians as of July 2003.

Zlenko assured reporters Ukrainian authorities were
directing their full attention to alleviating the
chaos on the Polish side of the Ukrainian border
caused by newly-enforced Ukrainian import laws.

Queues of Ukrainian vehicles of up to 3 kilometers in
length sprouted up at several border crossing points
in Poland after March 1, when Ukrainian customs
authorities enforced rules requiring traders to gain
official Ukrainian certification for the import of
goods from Poland.

Unable to obtain the required certification, thousands
of small- scale Ukrainian traders stuck in the lengthy
tailbacks have begun to dump their cargos of withering
fruits and vegetables and decomposing sausages on the
Polish roadsides, raising public health concerns.

Zlenko arrived in Warsaw Wednesday on a two-day
official visit.
