AP. 14 March 2002. Amnesty: US Detainees Denied Rights.

LONDON -- Amnesty International charged Thursday that hundreds of
foreign nationals arrested in the United States since the Sept. 11
terror attacks prompted heightened security have been detained
arbitrarily and deprived of basic rights.

The human rights group said many detainees had reported long bouts of
solitary confinement, heavy shackling and lack of exercise.

"Basic rights have been violated, including the rights to humane
treatment, to be informed of the reasons for the detention, to have
prompt access to a lawyer, to be able to challenge the lawfulness of the
detention and to be presumed innocent until proven otherwise," Amnesty
said.

The rights group claimed more than 1,200 foreign nationals had been
detained. The U.S. Justice Department said last week that 326 people
remained in custody.

The U.S. Department of Justice did not immediately return calls from The
Associated Press on Thursday.

Amnesty said its researchers interviewed lawyers, detainees and their
relatives and visited two New Jersey jails to assess conditions.

The group said many held for immigration violations were being subjected
to unnecessarily long periods of imprisonment.
