MSDF ships back from Indian Ocean

SASEBO, Nagasaki Pref. (Kyodo) Three Maritime
Self-Defense Force vessels have returned to their home
port of Sasebo in Nagasaki Prefecture after being
dispatched to the Indian Ocean as part of Japan's
provision of noncombat support to U.S.-led military
operations in Afghanistan, MSDF officials said
Saturday.
The 5,200-ton Kurama, the 4,550-ton Kirisame and
8,100-ton Hamana returned from the northern Indian
Ocean on Friday night, some four months after leaving
Sasebo on an intelligence-gathering mission Nov. 9.

More than 1,500 people, including Defense Agency chief
Gen Nakatani and relatives of MSDF officials and
sailors, greeted the return of the destroyers Kurama
and Kirisame and the supply ship Hamana, which docked
Saturday afternoon after entry and quarantine
procedures.

The three-ship fleet was dispatched under the Defense
Agency Establishment Law, which allows the government
to conduct "necessary investigation and research"
ahead of military operations. Five other MSDF vessels
are continuing operations in the Indian Ocean and may
remain in the area until May 19.
