Havel parts with troops leaving for Kuwait
March 18, 2002

PRAGUE, March 18 (CTK) - President Vaclav Havel
tonight parted with the 226 members of the Czech
chemical unit who are to leave for Kuwait before
midnight to take part in the Enduring Freedom mission.

[Don't read two hours after eating] The Czech
participation in the anti-terrorist operation shows
that the Czech Republic feels co-responsibility for
the state of the world and stands on the side of
freedom and human dignity against barbarism, Havel
said at the Ruzyne airport.

Chief-of-staff Jiri Sedivy said that the members of
the chemical unit from Liberec, north Bohemia, were
experienced soldiers.

On March 7 the first group of 20 soldiers left for
Kuwait to prepare conditions for the arrival of the
remaining troops.

A total of 250 Czech soldiers, including eight
women, will take part in the action. The main task of
the Czech troops deployed within Enduring Freedom will
be to protect the organising staff in Kuwait. The
Liberec chemical unit is also ready to join fight
against mass destruction arms and will cooperate with
German chemists.

Sedivy ruled out that the Czech troops could take
direct part in a possible attack on Iraq.

The mission is to last six months and is estimated
to cost around half a billion crowns.
