Vodvin announced the Russian position during a meeting with Lebanese President Emile Lahoud on the sidelines of the foreign ministers meeting in Beirut, which he is attending as an observer. The envoy, who conveyed a letter from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Lahoud, stressed that Russia stands for a diplomatic and political solution to the Iraqi issue. Russia welcomes Saudi Arabia's Mideast peace initiative, which calls on Israel to withdraw its troops from all occupied Arab lands in exchange for Arab recognition and normalization of ties with the Jewish state, Vodvin said. He expressed the hope that the March 27-28 Arab summit in Beirut will be conducive to solving the Mideast issues in a proper way. The Iraqi issue, the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflicts and Pan-Arab economic cooperation are expected to top the agenda of the Beirut summit.
