DJINDJIC SAYS A SOCIAL PROGRAM CANNOT EXIST
Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic announced today that in a
country with 780,000 unemployed and 500,000 workers in insolvent
firms a social program cannot exist, because "there is no one to
finance" such a program. "To open a single workplace takes 15,000
marks, which amounts to a total of 15 billion," said Djindjic during a
conversation with students of the Teaching Faculty in Sombor, which he
visited in the course of the campaign of the republic government
"Serbia on the right path."
"Because of this the government has decided on partial social
programs. Currently 60,000 workers from the huge state systems are
being provided for," added Djindjic. The premier also said that the
government has ideas on how to create new jobs and increase the number
of employed.
The deputy republic minister for agriculture, forestry and water
resources management, Dragan Markovic, at a meeting with businessmen
from the western Backa district, said that thanks to donated funds from
Japan and credits from Poland for the renewal of agricultural mechanization,
eight million dollars will be invested. Markovic said, at the regional
economic chamber in Sombor, which he visited during the course of the
tour "Serbia on a Good Path", that this year there will be no donated
funds intended for the retrograde of agricultural manufacture.
The deputy minister for commerce and privatization, Slobodan
Petrovic, announced that privatization awaits the large producers of
agricultural equipment such as IMT from Rakovica and "Zmaj" from
Zemun.
"First we will determine the surplus of unemployed, and after that
we will carry out privatization," he said, adding that there are
well-established firms, such as "Ferguson," that are interested in
this.
