Spanish police arrest 10, seize weapons in anti-ETA
operation

Spanish police arrested 10 people and seized an arms
cache as they swooped against militants suspected of
links to the Basque separatist organisation ETA, the
interior ministry said.

Spanish Civil Guards, or paramilitary police, arrested
two in San Sebastian, one in Ibarra, one in Tolosa and
one in Billabona, in a series of dawn raids in the
autonomous Basque province of Guipuzcoa in northern
Spain.

In a further swoop later Monday in San Sebastian,
police arrested five suspected members of the
extremist group which is fighting for an independent
homeland in northern Spain and southwestern France.

According to police chief Santiago Valdivielso, three
of those arrested in the latest operation were
carrying guns.

He added that the raid may have dismantled two ETA
calls from Guipozcoa, considered the militant group's
stronghold in the Basque country.

"This is the fourth ETA commando unit dismantled this
year by the civil guard," Interior Minister Mariano
Rajoy said earlier after the first round of arrests.

The operations also uncovered a substantial arms
cache, including 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of
explosives, grenade-launchers, machine-guns and
handguns, authorities said.

The explosives included the chemical choloratite and
11 sticks of the French dynamite Tytadin.

In other raids, police seized a pistol, a computer and
several documents.

Among those arrested was a 51-year-old man responsible
for the warehouse where some of the arms were kept.

Also on Monday, five groups supporting Basque
independence, called for ETA to declare a truce.

The five groups are Aralar and Zutik (two breakaway
groups from ETA's political wing, ETA Batasuna),
Batzarre (representing groups in the Navarre
province), Abertzaleen Batasuna (representing the
Basque region in France) and moderate Basque political
party, Eusko Alkartasuna.

At a press conference, the five launched an unarmed
campaign for sovereignty of an independent Basque
country which would surpass the political and judicial
framework "and respect the plurality of the seven
Basque regions."

The campaign is based on the Basque people's right to
ask for an "immediate and unlimited truce by ETA and
for ETA to work in common with all the nationalist and
democratic forces".
