http://www.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/getarticle.pl5?np20020326a7.htm Japan Times March 26, 2002 SDF antiterror support to be extended until May Japan plans to extend its Self-Defense Forces mission in the Indian Ocean, which provides logistic support of U.S.-led antiterrorism operations, to May 19, government sources said Monday. Defense Agency chief Gen Nakatani is likely to announce the extension as early as today, the sources said. The agency's guidelines on the SDF operations stipulate that the mission, which began Nov. 20, will be conducted until Sunday, "but will be extended to May 19 depending on the situation." The government will not revise the guidelines because officials consider it unnecessary, according to the sources. The guidelines were based on a government plan on Japan's antiterror operations support. The basic plan was endorsed by the Cabinet on Nov. 16 in line with the antiterrorism law enacted Oct. 29, 2001, following the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States and subsequent U.S.-led retaliatory attacks on Afghanistan. The agency is considering extending the mission for about another six months beyond May 19. It is expected to revise the guidelines in early May unless a major development occurs -- like the arrest or confirmation of the death of major figures such as Osama bin Laden, the prime terror suspect, or Taliban leader Mohammed Omar.
