The army has destroyed the gates to the compound and have opened a hole in the building to the offices. It seems they will storm the building," Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo told Reuters by telephone from inside the complex. Armored bulldozers had torn down a perimeter fence, Palestinian officials said. Abed Rabbo said Israeli army snipers had been spotted in positions atop buildings facing the headquarters and had shot and wounded three of Arafat's bodyguards. Israeli military sources confirmed an army operation in Ramallah but refused to give details. Shortly before, aides to Arafat said a gun battle had erupted between his security detail and Israeli troops who had entered the city of Ramallah, nine miles north of Jerusalem, in a column of several dozen tanks. The incursion, carried out in retaliation for the killing of 20 Israelis in a seaside hotel by a Palestinian suicide bomber, came shortly after Arafat said he was prepared for an immediate cease-fire, an offer dismissed by the Israeli government. Palestinians rose up against Israeli occupation 18 months ago.
