AFP. 31 March 2002. Cuba demands end to Arafat's isolation. HAVANA -- The government of Cuban President Fidel Castro on Sunday demanded an immediate end to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's isolation. Havana demands "the end of the isolation and harassment against Yasser Arafat," as well as an end to "the abuses carried out by the Israeli occupation forces," read a statement from the Cuban Foreign Ministry, published in state-run news media. Cuba "energetically condemns the aggression that is being carried out against the Palestinian people and its authorities" and calls for more energetic action from the international community, and especially from the United Nations Security Council, "to halt the massacre and the genocidal action of the Israeli Army," it said. In light of the peace initiative recently approved by the Arab League in Beirut -- which envisages normalized Arab relations with Israel in exchange for full Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories -- the answer "by the (Israeli) government of Ariel Sharon, supported and financed by the United States, has been destruction and death," the statement said.
