Britain Sends Elite Troops to Bagram

The Associated Press
Tuesday, April 2, 2002; 2:57 AM

BAGRAM, Afghanistan The first batch of combat
fighters from Britain's elite Royal Marines was bound
for Afghanistan after weeks of waiting aboard a ship
in the Persian Gulf, a British military spokesman said
Tuesday.

About 200 British marines are already at the allied
base at Bagram, outside Kabul, working to clear mines.
Some 1,700 British marines are expected to be at
Bagram by the end of the week, a force that will
replace a segment of U.S. soldiers who are headed
home.

Lt. Col. Paul Harradine said the first 100 fighters
would arrive Tuesday, though he would not specify
exactly when or by what route.

Harradine said the troops would need some time to
adjust to the climate at this former Soviet base in
central Afghanistan, located about 6,000 feet above
sea level.

The arrival of the Royal marines has been delayed in
order to make sure the area where they will live and
work is clear of mines. After decades of fighting,
Bagram is littered with unexploded ordnance some
sticking out of the ground.

U.S. Maj. Bryan Hilferty, spokesman for the 10th
Mountain Division stationed at Bagram, said two
weapons caches were found Monday.

One cache was found in the Shah-e-Kot area, the region
in eastern Afghanistan where U.S.-led forces launched
Operation Anaconda, the biggest offensive yet in the
Afghan war. The cache included rocket-propelled
grenades and boxes of small arms.

The second was near the Kandahar base used by
coalition forces in southern Afghanistan. Hilferty
declined to give details about the weapons found in
Kandahar, but said it was "a relatively large cache
that could have been used to attack the base."
