Indonesian Army Rejects U.S. Military

JAKARTA, April 1 (Xinhuanet) -- The
Indonesian Army Strategic
Reserves Command (Kostrad) Commander
Ryamizard Ryacudu has
underlined his objections to the United States'
offer of a
military alignment to combat terrorism.
"Even though we need military supports from the United States,
it does
not necessarily mean that we will approve every Uncle Sam's
request
regarding terrorism", the commander said in Solo,
Central Java
province, on Sunday night.
"Our intelligence is capable
enough to cope with this problem,
that's the point. We know this
country better than anyone else
does and we have to settle our own
problems. We need no help",
Ryacudu was quoted by the Detikcom online
news service as saying.
Indonesia-U.S. military
cooperation was also challenged by
Chairman of the Indonesian Legal
Aid and Human Rights Association
(PBHI) Hendardi, who was worried that
empowering the Indonesian
Military (TNI)with weaponry would only
increase the military's
destructive capability, thus posing a danger
to democracy and
human rights protection.
"Should the
military ties be resumed, it will lead Indonesia
into another dark age
of anti-democracy",Hendardi was quoted by
the Jakarta Post as
saying.
Several U.S. senators have met Vice President
Hamzah Haz and
Coordinating Minister for Political and Security
Affairs Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono on Saturday to look into the
possibility of
resuming military cooperation.
Military
ties between both countries have been gradually
restored since 2000,
but the U.S. maintains an embargo on combat
