Russia has a large number of troops stationed in Abkhazia, as well as peacekeepers who patrol the border area with Georgia. TBILISI (Associated Press) - A group of NATO experts is helping the former Soviet republic of Georgia to build up its military intelligence capabilities, a top Georgian official said Wednesday. A NATO delegation arrived in the Georgian capital Tbilisi on Tuesday to conduct a two-day seminar on how to structure Georgia's military intelligence service, said Georgian Deputy Defense Minister Gela Bezhuashvili. The seminar is part of NATO's Partnership for Peace program, he said. NATO commander Nikolas Katagas, who came with the delegation, met separately with Georgian Defense Minister David Tevzadze and other top military officials, Bezhuashvili said. A retired German general, Frank Werner, is also in Tbilisi advising the Georgian government on how to reform its armed forces, he added. Wednesday's flurry of activity was the latest sign that Georgia is seeking outside help to strengthen its ailing military. The United States plans to send 200 military instructors to provide anti-terrorist training to Georgian troops, for use in the Pankisi Gorge, where the U.S. has said al-Qaida and other terrorists are seeking refuge. The military training has raised tensions between Georgia and Abkhazia, a separatist region that achieved de facto independence from Georgia in 1993 after a two-year war. Abkhaz officials have accused Georgia of taking a more aggressive stance toward their separatist region, since joining the U.S.-led war against terrorism. Russia has a large number of troops stationed in Abkhazia, as well as peacekeepers who patrol the border area with Georgia. Also Wednesday, Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze told his Cabinet that he wants to strengthen the campaign against corruption in Georgia. He threatened to dismiss his entire government if there is no progress in rooting out corrupt officials over the next two to three months. /The Associated Press/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
