AFP. 5 April 2002. Protest-hit Moldovan government asks for Council of Europe observers. CHISINAU -- Moldova's Communist President Vladimir Voronin on Friday appealed to the Council of Europe to send observers to his country, saying he feared that a wave of opposition protests could lead to bloodshed. The appeal to the Europe-wide rights and democracy body's council of ministers was signed by Voronin, Prime Minister Vasily Tarlev and the speaker of the parliament, Yevgeny Ostapchuk. "We cannot rule out incidents which could cause victims. We ask you to urgently send observers to supervise the development of the situation in the republic," says the letter sent to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. Thousands of people have been holding protest rallies each day in the Moldovan capital Chisinau since Sunday to demand the Communist government's resignation. The protests have not led to any injuries so far. The Moldovan leaders also accused the opposition Christian Democrats, which have organised the rallies, "of resorting to blackmail and encouraging violence," in the letter which was published Friday in the official daily Nezavisimaya Moldova. The Communist government, elected last year after a decade of conservative rule in Moldova, a former Soviet republic, favours a rapprochement with Moscow. But the pro-Romanian opposition is pushing for union with Bucharest. Much of Moldova formed part of Romania prior to its annexation by the Soviet Union under the terms of the 1939 Nazi-Soviet pact. The Christian Democrats have only 11 out of 101 seats in the parliament, compared to 71 held by the Communists. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
