In an address to the nation a short time later, he called for calm following what he called the stupefying events of the past few days. Two days after he was toppled from power amid deadly street violence, Chavez returned to the presidential palace shortly after 3 a.m. Interim president Pedro Carmona resigned after less than a day in office as thousands of Chavez supporters demonstrated in the streets for his return. Sixteen people died and hundreds were wounded. Rioting continued on Saturday, with dozens more dying in the mayhem. Following Carmona's resignation, which he broadcast on national radio, Chavez was released and returned to power. Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered at the palace to welcome Chavez back. Chavez's supporters said he never resigned as Carmona and the country's top generals had claimed. Carmona's ministers were put under arrest by Chavez's attorney general Isaias Rodriguez following the resignation. Charges are pending, he said, adding some military leaders would be tried for military rebellion. A former army paratrooper, Chavez led a failed coup in 1992.
