Slovene Government Launches Campaign to Boost Interest
in NATO

-According to an opinion poll carried out by the
Ljubljana Faculty for Political Science two weeks ago,
only 38.8 percent of about 2 million Slovenes favor
membership.

LJUBLJANA, Apr 16, 2002 -- (dpa) The Slovene
government on Monday launched a special NATO hotline
telephone to stimulate support for membership of the
alliance among citizens.

The NATO hotline, which is a part of a larger
government campaign to boost interest in NATO, will
try to explain the advantages of membership and how it
would benefit the country. Calls are free of charge.

Public support for membership of NATO in Slovenia has
been poor. Senior officials were recently warned that
the alliance does not want to accept any members who
are unwilling to join.

According to an opinion poll carried out by the
Ljubljana Faculty for Political Science two weeks ago,
only 38.8 percent of about 2 million Slovenes favor
membership. The total number of those polled was not
published, however.

Analysts say that the low level of support is due to
fears of increased costs as Slovenia would have to
modernize the military.

According to analysts, Slovenes are disappointed that
they were not invited to join NATO in the first round
of enlargement in 1997, when the Czech Republic,
Poland and Hungary became members.
