FYI: from ICPJ news service -------------------- Passed by the California Federation of Teachers Convention, March, 2002 WHEREAS, there is a continuing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan; and WHEREAS, extending further destructive military operations against other nations or organizations in pursuit of the war on terrorism causes the death of innocent civilians, promotes continued acts of terrorism, diverts needed resources from public education and other social services, and puts our students at risk; and WHEREAS, legislation or executive orders that curtail civil rights, including proposals for increased federal surveillance of private activities, for greater use of racial profiling, and for establishing secret military tribunals deny the constitutional guarantees of privacy, due process, and checks and balances; and WHEREAS, many pro-corporate, anti-labor, anti-environmental policies have been adopted or proposed; such as the airline bailout without protection for laid-off workers, fast track trade legislation, opening up federal lands in Alaska to oil drilling, and an economic "stimulus" package that mostly rewards giant corporations at the expense of needed public services, including education; THEREFORE BE RESOLVED, that the California Federation of Teachers urge the US government to commit massive economic, emergency, medical and food aid to Afghanistan; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the CFT oppose the extension of the war to other countries and organizations; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the CFT stand with civil, human rights, and other organizations in opposing any curtailment of basic constitutional and human rights; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the CFT vehemently oppose the passage of legislation which supports pro-corporate, anti-labor policies at the expense of social services and public education; and BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the CFT inform appropriate US government representatives of our position and instruct delegates to our national affiliate to raise this and/or similar motions for adoption. --------------------------- ANTI-NATO INFORMATION LIST ==^================================================================ This email was sent to: [email protected] EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?a84x2u.a9617B Or send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] T O P I C A -- Register now to manage your mail! http://www.topica.com/partner/tag02/register ==^================================================================
