North wants dialogue on
equal terms with U.S.
by staff
reporter April 18, 2002
North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-il wishes to hold talks with the
United States on equal terms, Mayor Vladimir Yakovlev of St. Petersburg, Russia,
said Thursday at a press conference in Seoul.
The mayor said the North's
leader views the resumption of inter-Korean talks in positively light, but did
not outline any specific schedule for the much-delayed second inter-Korean
summit.
Mr. Yakovlev also added a direct air route between Pyeongyang
and St. Petersburg is expected to be established this June, making it possible
for trilateral cooperation between the city and the two Koreas.
He went
on to express hopes of momentum on railway projects to link a Trans-Korean
railway with the Trans-Siberian railway when the two Koreas resume the second
Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation Committee meeting in Seoul scheduled from May
7-10.
He further hinted North Korea's trade representative office is
likely to open in St. Petersburg soon as called for by Mr. Kim in August last
year.
Mr. Yakovlev met with presidential adviser Lim Dong-won at the
Blue House a day before to explain the results of his visit to Pyeongyang along
with a letter of condolence from President Vladimir Putin of Russia for the
South Koreans killed Monday in the Chinese jetliner crash near Busan.
