   Israel accepts U.N.probe of Jenin

Israel pledged today to cooperate with a U.N. mission to probe its
massive military assault on the Jenin refugee camp and said it had
nothing to hide in the face of Palestinian accusations of a massacre.
Palestinians said they hoped the U.N. Security Council's unanimous
decision on Friday to send a fact-finding team to the camp could lead
to an international criminal trial of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon and other senior figures. Meanwhile, Israel has rejected an
offer from Palestinian leader Arafat to try the suspected killers of
Israeli cabinet minister Zeevi in a Palestinian court. President Bush
said on Thursday that Zeevi's suspected assassinsshould be brought to
justice but did not say where. At least 1,287 Palestinians and 452
Israelis have died since a Palestinian revolt against occupation
   erupted 18 months ago.

Britain warns former Afghan king of death plot

The British military warned on Saturday that Afghanistan's newly
returned former king, Mohammad Zahir Shah, was under threat of
assassination from killers posing as journalists. A British Royal
Marines spokesman spoke to reporters at Bagram air base just outside
Kabul, where Zahir Shah returned from 29 years exile in Italy on
Thursday. Last year, the legendary Northern Alliance leader Ahmed
Shah Masood was killed when two Arabs exploded a bomb hidden in a
television camera they were using to interview the leader. He died
just two days before the September 11th attacks on the United States,
which intelligence reports say could have been part of the same plot
by Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.

Peace talks on Congo war collapse

The collapse of peace talks to end Africa's biggest war in the
Democratic Republic of Congo could doom the former Zaire to prolonged
conflict or even partition, analysts warned on Saturday. They said the
crisis could possibly lead to more direct fighting between neighbours
Rwanda and Uganda, who each support rival rebel factions in Africa's
third largest country. Talks ended in failure late on Friday in South
Africa, after the government and the biggest rebel group, the
Rwandan-backed Congolese Rally for Democracy, refused to yield on key
issues. These were the role of President Kabila in a transitional
government ahead of pluralist elections and the role of the rebels in
a future government, as well as defence-related matters.

Algerian rebels kill seven in latest attack

Islamic rebels have killed seven family members and wounded four
others in western Algeria, the official Algerian news agency APS
reported on Saturday. It said the killing took place in Hai Maarouf
village, 160 km west of the capital Algiers. The father of the family
was a pro-government militiaman. Thousands of soldiers and militiamen
loyal to the government have been killed in ambushes and gun battles
with rebels since 1992, when the authorities scrapped a parliamentary
election that radical Islamists were poised to win. More than 150,000
   civilians have been killed since.

Tunesia Says Explosion was an Attack

Tunesia has now said it believes the April 11th explosion of a
delivery truck on the island of Djerba was a terrorist attack.
Tunesian Foreign Minister Yahia said that he believed an
international terrorist group was responsible for the powerful
detonation at the historic Synagogue on the popular vacation island.
The Tunesian government originally called the explosion an accident,
in which 16 people, including several Germans were killed. German
Interior Minister Otto Schily said in an interview, however, that he
did not believe Germans were specifically targeted in the attack.

Yugoslav Army chief will surrender to The Hague next week

Retired general Dragoljub Ojdanic, who commanded Yugoslav Army forces
during their 1998-99 Kosovo campaign, will go to The Hague sometime
next week to face UN war crimes charges, his lawyer said in Belgrade
on Saturday. His voluntary surrender would mark the first success for
the new Yugoslav law passed on April 11th, requiring citizens
indicted for war crimes to surrender to the United Nations court in
the Netherlands. A list of 23 indictees was published by the Yugoslav
   government last week.

   Oman bus crash kills 46

An Omani construction firm blamed mechanical failure on Saturday for
a bus crash that killed 46 of its employees and left one in critical
condition. The bus with 55 people on board skidded off a mountain
road. Most of the passengers were from the Indian subcontinent,
including the Indian driver, who was killed. Police have said they
believed high speed was the cause of the accident in southern Oman
   near Dhofar province.
