Army to have 4 billion for missions after 2006

countries and the Czech Republic should above all take
place outside their territory.

PRAGUE, April 29 (CTK) - The new military strategy of
the Czech Republic, approved by the government today,
wants to have three and a half to four billion crowns
a year for foreign peace- keeping missions after 2006,
Deputy Defence Minister Stefan Fuele said at a seminar
after the cabinet meeting today.

The military strategy newly defines the Czech
Republic's military and political ambitions and for
the soldiers it is a new task, Fuele said.

Above all, the Czech Republic will have to be able to
take part in the joint defence of NATO countries with
all of its armed forces, including reserves. This also
ensues from the article five of the Washington Treaty
which laid the foundations of the alliance.

The strategy presumes that the defence of NATO
countries and the Czech Republic should above all take
place outside their territory.

This is why the Czech Republic must be able to deploy
a brigade of up to 5,000 men for six months for a
single peace- keeping operation, Fuele said.

There is the alternative of a long-term mission of
1,000 people who can rotate at any time and another
250 soldiers for six months for other operations.
Moreover, instead of soldiers, aircraft can be sent
correspondingly, he added.

If the Czech Republic buys the Jas-39 Gripen fighters,
it is to set aside twelve of them for NATO needs. Four
of them for a joint NATO air defence system and eight
for missions abroad.

The missions are to be paid from the Defence Ministry
budget, Fuele said.

   ($1 = 33.794 crowns)
