British soldiers banned from handing out sweets in Kabul
======================================

British soldiers in Afghanistan have been told to stop giving sweets to
children.

The order was issued amid concerns that children were running into the road
when patrols passed.

It was feared the practice of handing out sweets was hindering the soldier's
work and that a child may be run over.

Officers feared the rumble of troop carriers and jeeps had become the Kabul
equivalent of the chimes of ice cream vans.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence told The Daily Telegraph: "Kids get
very excited about sweets and they have a wild enthusiasm to get them."

Soldiers from the 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment instead showed their
generosity yesterday by handing out pens and exercise books to children at
an orphanage.
