Largest Ever Slovene Unit Set to Leave for Peace Mission in Bosnia LJUBLJANA, May 2, 2002 -- (dpa) The largest-ever Slovene armed forces unit is set to leave for Bosnia-Herzegovina to participate in a peacekeeping operation there, the defense ministry said Tuesday. A total of 109 professional Slovene soldiers, members of the 10th motorized battalion, will be the part of SFOR, the NATO-led peacekeeping forces that have been maintaining peace in Bosnia since the end of the civil war in 1995. The ministry said that it is unclear when the unit will be deployed. It will be on standby as of May 1. The squad is to leave for the mission with new Humvee and Valuk vehicles and new equipment. It will be the first time that Slovene soldiers operate independently abroad, the ministry said. So far, foreign armed forces have taken care of the logistic support of Slovene soldiers on peacekeeping missions. Slovene Armed Forces will be responsible for the latest mission. The unit in Bosnia will receive some supplies directly from Slovenia. Currently, Slovenia is a member of the NATO's Partnership for Peace program which is considered the first step towards full membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. The country hopes to become a member at NATO's next summit this November in Prague. (C)2002. dpa Deutsche Presse-Agentur __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
