BAGHDAD -- An Iraqi official newspaper on Thursday accused the United
Nations of double standards for imposing sanctions on Iraq while failing
to take action against Israel for blocking the Jenin inquiry mission.

"If the matter concerns an Arab country that rejects an alleged charge
against it fabricated by America... we will find the Security Council
issuing new resolutions, imposing sanctions or even calling for the use
of military force," al-Thawra, the ruling Baath Party newspaper, said,
in a reference to the U.N. Security Council's resolutions on Iraq.

"But this time the accusations are against the Zionist entity (Israel),
so neither the Security Council nor U.N. Secretariat General is doing
anything," the paper said in a front-page editorial.

Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz on Wednesday also criticised the
United Nations for its failure to sent a fact-finding mission to Jenin
refugee camp.

"Israel is violating international law and international humanitarian
law and is committing massacres before our eyes and cameras of the
television, and the Security Council cannot send a fact-finding mission
to Palestine," he said.

"Why? Because it is Israel and because America is Israel, the (U.N.)
secretary-general cannot defy America and its ally Israel," Aziz told a
conference organised by Iraq's Friendship, Peace and Solidarity
Organisation.
