http://www.irna.com/en/world/020625014052.ewo.shtml Ukraine to join program for membership in NATO Kiev, June 25, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Ukraine plans to sign a political document on its accession to the program for membership in NATO at the North Alliance's upcoming summit in Prague, a high-ranking official said. Speaking at the international seminar "Ukraine and Regional Security Cooperation: Looking into the Future" held in Kiev on Monday, first deputy secretary of the National Security and defense Council Sergei Pirozhkov said the proposed NATO document will contain concrete forms of cooperation with the Alliance member-states. It includes five main sections, including concrete measures in the political, economic and defense spheres, as well as in the fields of security and law. After Ukraine and 19 NATO countries have signed the political document in Prague, the Ukrainian leadership will adopt a national program on the implementation of the program for membership in NATO, Pirozhkov said. He said there is a number of problems Kiev will have to solve in the very near future in connection with its decision to join NATO. These include border problems with Russia and Romania, and issues connected with the future of the Russian Black Sea Fleet base in Sevastopol. On May 23, the Ukrainian Security Council decided to "start a long-term process of evolution of our relations with NATO, the ultimate goal of which is Ukraine's accession to the North Alliance's collective security system". On May 29, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Anatoly Zlenko handed over to NATO Secretary-General George Robertson a personal message from President Leonid Kuchma who confirmed Kiev's desire to work out and agree a new strategy of relations with NATO committed to membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
