FBI probes ex-Rhodie

Political Editor Munyaradzi Huni
A FORMER agent in the Rhodesian army, who also served in the notorious Selou=
s Scouts when the then Rhodesia was hit by an anthrax outbreak between 1978 =
and 1980, Mr Steven J. Hatfill, is being investigated by the Federal Bureau =
of Investigation (FBI) for allegedly smuggling anthrax out of a biological w=
arfare defence laboratory in America.

Mr Hatfill is understood to have been a student at the University of Zimbabw=
es Medical School from 1978 to 1984.

He later worked for two years at Fort Detrick in the virology division of th=
e US Army Medical Institute of Infectious Diseases, where the anthrax is sus=
pected to have been smuggled from. He stopped working at the laboratory in S=
eptember 1999.

Reports say the FBI search on Mr Hatfills apartment at the end of last mont=
h followed suspicion that someone secretly grew the deadly anthrax that was =
mailed to politicians and media organisations in that country in October las=
t year.

It is believed that Mr Hatfill is among a small pool of people who have acce=
ss to detailed knowledge of how to grow and "weaponise" the highly lethal an=
d concentrated dry powder spores of anthrax.

CBS News reported that the former Rhodesian agent was among 20 to 30 scienti=
sts who were under FBI investigation but added that law enforcement official=
s had said Mr Hatfill was not a suspect and no evidence linked him to the an=
thrax-laced letters.

According to the American Prospect Web feature, Mr Hatfill was required to t=
ake a polygraph test to qualify his clearance.

"Hatfill allegedly told the military official that he failed the polygraph o=
n questions concerning his activities in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). The people co=
nducting the polygraph were amateurs, Hatfill allegedly complained to his i=
nterlocutor. They couldnt understand what Cold Warriors like himself had to=
 do in Rhodesia.

"The military official recalls Hatfill as saying that his father-in-law had =
been killed by rebels (freedom fighters) in Rhodesia, and he had consequentl=
y undertaken some actions that caused concern when he was given his polygrap=
h test," reads part of the TAP Web feature.

Although the FBI has said Mr Hatfill is not a suspect, it has come under hea=
vy criticism from the American media that is saying if Mr Hatfill was an Ara=
b national, "he could have been imprisoned a long time ago".

The media is also questioning why the FBI is taking its time in the investig=
ations considering that Mr Hatfill was in the Rhodesia army when the biggest=
ever recorded anthrax outbreak in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) sickened about 10 000=
 blacks and killed 182 others.

There is evidence in the country that shows that the Ian Smith regime used a=
nthrax to discourage blacks from co-operating with the liberation fighters a=
t the height of the liberation struggle.

Security agents in the country confirmed to The Sunday Mail that Mr Hatfill =
served in the Rhodesian army and was among those highly placed sensitive per=
sonnel whose files were destroyed soon after independence. The agents also s=
aid the former Rhodesian agent came back into the country in 1994 as a docto=
r. Many Rhodesians who committed serious crimes before independence ran away=
soon after 1980 and came back into the country as professionals.

The security agents said Mr Hatfill could have returned into the country in =
1994 to "see the effects of the anthrax that they used on blacks before inde=
pendence".

Even TAP Web feature reported that Mr Hatfills "longer biography is riddled=
with gaps where classified projects presumably belong".

>From Zimbabwe, Mr Hatfill moved to South Africa "where he completed various =
military and medical assignments".

He obtained three masters degrees, studying for a doctorate degree and prac=
tising in a South African clinic.

ABC News recently reported that the FBI was interested in Mr Hatfill "partly=
because he lived, while in Zimbabwe, near a Greendale elementary school.

"Greendale School" in Franklin Park, NJ, was printed in large block letters =
as the false return address on the anthrax-laden envelopes sent to Sens, Tom=
Daschle and Patrick Leahy last fall".

There have been reports that the American government uses wars elsewhere as =
trial grounds for their weapons and it is a possibility that Mr Hatfill coul=
d have been sent to the then Rhodesia to test the effects of anthrax.

Since independence, there have been no anthrax outbreaks in white commercial=
farms while there has been a recurrence of anthrax outbreaks in the communa=
l lands, raising suspicion that the Smith regime only used anthrax in those =
areas where the war was fought.

During the presidential election campaigns for the March 2002 elections, som=
e suspected anthrax-laced letters were allegedly sent to some Government off=
icials and the media.

A suspected anthrax attack was detected at Causeway Post Office in January t=
his year after two mail sorting workers had fallen ill.

The attack forced the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare to temporarily cl=
ose the post office.

Anthrax-laced mail has also been detected at The Chronicle newspaper in Bula=
wayo while one such letter, addressed to the Minister of State for Informati=
on and Publicity, Professor Jonathan Moyo, was intercepted at the post offic=
e.

It is suspected that the anthrax-laced letters had been sent by former Rhode=
sians sympathetic to the MDC and opposed to the land reform exercise.

Some of the top officials in the MDC served in the Rhodesian army and the Se=
lous Scouts during the Smith regime. These officials include the partys leg=
islator for Bulawayo South, Mr David Coltart, and his Chimanimani colleague,=
 Mr Roy Bennett.

Scores of mail containing anthrax spores were detected at various post offic=
es and media houses in the US after the September 11 terrorist attacks on th=
e World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.
