SKOPJE, July 8 (AFP) - Some 100 relatives of 12 Macedonians who went missing during last year's conflict between government forces and ethnic Albanian rebels blocked a main road Monday in a demonstration to find out what happened to their kin. A police spokesman said shots were fired from a nearby village populated by ethnic Albanians but no one was hurt. The demonstrators blockaded the road with their cars, causing a major snarl-up on the main southern highway linking the capital Skopje and the southwestern town Tetovo. They want Macedonian authorities and international officials in Skopje to provide information about the fate of the missing 12, and said they would not lift the blockade until given this. The 12 are believed to have been kidnapped or killed by now disbanded ethnic Albanian guerrillas of the National Liberation Army during more than six months of conflict last year. The rebel NLA launched its insurgency last year in what it said was a bid to improve rights for ethnic Albanians, who make up almost one third of Macedonia's two million people. The Macedonian government had accused the rebels of trying to unite northwestern Macedonia with the adjacent province of Serbian Kosovo, which also has a predominantly Albanian population.
