PRISTINA, Yugoslavia, July 17 (AFP) - The EU said Wednesday some 4.5 million euros believed stolen from the budget of Kosovo's electricity company earlier this year has been tracked to several Gibraltar bank accounts. "It was known at the beginning that the money had originally gone to Gibraltar. The concern was whether it was removed from Gibraltar," Andy Bearpark of the EU's economic program in the province said at a news conference. "That money has been frozen and will return to Kosovo." In March Bearpark announced he had evidence of possible corruption in Kosovo's electricity company (KEK), which produces energy locally and imports it from outside. A member of the UN mission in the territory was also suspected of involvement in the disappearance of the money given to the UN-administered province as part of international aid. Although no arrests have been made, Bearpark said the investigation carried out by the European anti-fraud office OLAF was continuing. "We want the money because Kosovo needs the money and that's why we are getting the money back. But I have got total, absolute guarantees that the investigation does not stop," Bearpark said. The funds traced in Gibraltar were frozen by the Supreme Court there upon the request of OLAF and the UN mission in Kosovo. The province's economy has struggled to recover since Kosovo came under UN administration in 1999 after NATO military action ended than Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic's crackdown on ethnic Albanians in the province.
