If a referendum on EU membership took place next week, some 56.3 percent of Slovenes would vote to join the Union, 22.5 percent would oppose the move and 21.3 percent remain undecided, according to the results of the poll carried out this summer. But researcher Samo Uhan told a press conference that most Slovenes do not see EU membership as a way to improve their current situation, with only 14 percent of Slovenes believing that EU embership would change their lives for the better. Slovenia, a country of two million people that declared independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991, is one of the most developed of 10 mainly ex-communist European nations that hope to join the EU by 2004. The others are the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland and Slovakia. The small Alpine republic also expects to be invited to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) at its Prague summit in November. But according to the poll only 42.2 percent of Slovenes support the move. Some 31.5 percent of those polled said they would vote against their country joining NATO if asked to, while 26.2 percent were undecided. But Information Secretary Alja Brglez told AFP after the conference that the results did not worry the government.
