NATO defence ministers have met to discuss the Alliance's role in fighting terrorism, with a briefing from the United States on its unfolding showdown with Iraq at the centre of the agenda. Early on in the two-day meeting in the Polish capital on Tuesday US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was expected to urge his 18 allies to create a standing NATO "response force" to deal swiftly with crises outside its traditional area of operation, a plan inspired by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. As Washington attempts to gain greater understanding, if not outright support, from allied governments in its showdown with Iraq, Rumsfeld was also set to give allies on Tuesday an intelligence briefing on Iraq's drive to acquire chemical, biological and nuclear weapons. The informal two-day meeting, which was not expected to take any decisions, was also the last chance to prepare for a landmark summit of the transatlantic alliance in Prague in November, at which it is expected to invite up to seven ex-communist countries to become NATO members. It was also to discuss the strengthening of its military forces and a reform of its command structure.
