Letter to Pres. Bush re. Iraq:
September 21, 2002
President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Washington, DC 20500
Dear President Bush:
I am appalled at the disregard you have shown for world opinion
by calling
for an attack against Iraq.
Such an attack would be a huge mistake, which would cause the
deaths and
suffering of thousands of Iraqis, including civilians, as well as
possibly
many American soldiers. You seem to be either unaware, or unconcerned,
that
these are the very legitimate reasons why most of the countries in the
world
oppose your war plans.
Are you aware that the tone of your recent speech to the United
Nations
came across as very arrogant and threatening to those who disagree with
you?
You could have listened to people's concerns about Iraq, their
concerns
about the inevitable loss of life and the prospects for the worsening of
the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict ensuing from a war. Instead, you simply
accused them of making the United Nations "irrelevant" if they
questioned
whether removing the Iraqi leadership by force was the best way to
achieve
democracy in Iraq. This is just the kind of image that the United
States
should be trying to avoid, that of being a bullying superpower. It is
this
attitude that inevitably makes us more enemies in the world.
I ask you to please consider the great suffering that the Iraqi
people,
mostly civilians, have already endured because of US policy toward them.
Over one million people, most of them children have died in Iraq as a
result
of the crippling economic sanctions by the US and the UN, and the
near-daily
bombing raids in the "no-fly" zones. You came into office under the
campaign promise to be a "compassionate conservative", but you do not
exhibit compassion by being so insensitive to the suffering of
innocents.
Your war in Afghanistan has not helped to alleviate the
suffering of the
grieving families of the September 11th victims. Rather, it has caused
the
deaths of almost twice as many civilians in Afghanistan as the US lost
of
our own people in the September 11th tragedy. Yet, you have offered no
apologies or compensation for these victims, not even for the victims of
the
tragic wedding party bombing that US forces carried out earlier this
year.
What must the world think of the United States as a nation when
we show
such callousness?
I ask you to please not create even more innocent victims by
invading Iraq.
Please heed the advice of Scott Ritter, who knows that Iraq does not
present a threat to the United States. Seek out advice from others who
advocate peaceful ways of dealing with Iraq, rather than just from
people
calling for war. Many people in this country do not want more killing
done
in our name.
Sincerely,
Nancy A. Hey
