-In addition, defense officials said that this month
special operations troops began training alongside CIA
units that could be used in covert counter-terrorism
operations within Iraq.
-Several thousand Army soldiers also are moving into
Kuwait as part of regularly scheduled exercises or
troop replacements, while about 600 military planners
from the U.S. Central Command are now training in
Qatar, according to the report.

One thousand Marines from the 11th Marine
Expeditionary Unit at Camp Pendleton, Calif., began
exercises in Kuwait on Tuesday, according to a report
by the Los Angeles Times.

The exercises with Kuwaiti troops have been scheduled
for some time but take on new significance given the
Bush administrations interest in invading Iraq. The
exercises, which will be held only about 300 miles
from Baghdad, will acquaint troops with how to fight a
war in flat, sandy terrain.

This appears to be the U.S. militarys latest show of
muscle in the region. In recent weeks, the Pentagon
has built up the already considerable levels of troops
and equipment in the areas surrounding Iraq. In
addition, defense officials said that this month
special operations troops began training alongside CIA
units that could be used in covert counter-terrorism
operations within Iraq.

The newspaper report quoted a senior Navy official
that many of its ships, including three aircraft
carrier battle groups based on the West Coast, have
accelerated training and maintenance schedules to get
ready for any short-notice orders to steam toward the
Persian Gulf.

Several thousand Army soldiers also are moving into
Kuwait as part of regularly scheduled exercises or
troop replacements, while about 600 military planners
from the U.S. Central Command are now training in
Qatar, according to the report.
