GAZA -- Israeli helicopter gunships fired missiles into Gaza City on Thursday, killing at least three people and destroying two cars, Palestinian witnesses and medical officials said. The air strike hit Gaza's Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood, a stronghold of the Islamic group Hamas which is at the forefront of a two-year-old Palestinian uprising for independence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Hundreds of angry Palestinians flocked to the scene, pulled body parts from the charred wreckage of the cars and bore them aloft, shouting defiantly. Witnesses said one car took a direct hit, and the explosion set fire to a second vehicle. Palestinian medical officials said several people were wounded in the attack, whose explosions rocked the Palestinian-ruled coastal city. The names of the dead were not immediately known. The Gaza raid came after a the death of 14-month-old Palestinian baby who inhaled tear gas fired by Israeli soldiers at a busy market in the West Bank town of Hebron. The soldiers were using tear gas to enforce a curfew. The International Red Crescent organisation says this is thought to be the first time a child has died of tear gas inhalation during the current violence. A BBC correspondent in Jerusalem says the death of the baby girl highlights the confusion that often surrounds curfews imposed by the Israelis, leaving Palestinians unaware of when they are allowed to go out to buy food. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
