[To add to recent threats and sanctions againt Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia and the Bosnian Serb Republic for allegedly selling some vague dual use or strictly defensive equipment to Baghdad. And perhaps to let Nelson Mandela know not to criticize US-UK unilateral warmongering as he has since 1999?] http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_678592.html?menu=news.latestheadlines.worldnews Ananova September 26, 2002 South Africa denies Iraq nuclear approach South Africa has denied that Iraq tried to buy uranium there describing a British intelligence report suggesting so as vague and unsubstantiated. A dossier of evidence against Iraq claims it tried to acquire "significant quantities" of uranium from Africa. South Africa is the only African country with the capacity to produce the enriched form of uranium used in nuclear weapons. The country's deputy foreign affairs minister Aziz Pahad says the report implies that Iraq tried to buy it from South African companies. He said: "Our information is that we have not been requested to sell, at least through this democratic government, uranium to Iraq. "We have such a strict regime here... That it is very difficult for any company to sell that sort of material." Mr Pahad said Britain has been asked to prove its claims, stating: "If they have more evidence, they should give it to us so we can investigate. "We need clarification on vague statements." --------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.nationaudio.com/News/DailyNation/Today/News/News81.html The Daily Nation (Kenya) Thursday, September 26, 2002 Kenyan link in Iraq war plan By PAUL REDFERN, in LONDON Five Iraqi agents were arrested in Kenya on their way to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to acquire uranium, a new report claims. The revelations, made by an unnamed Western intelligence officer, followed a report presented to the British Parliament by Prime Minister Tony Blair on Tuesday. Uranium is a vital component in the manufacture of nuclear bombs. According to a report in the Guardian newspaper, the five men were arrested by Kenya's police in November on their way to the DRC. They carried fake Indian passports. The report released to British MPs said that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had been trying to acquire significant quantities of uranium from Africa for some time. Baghdad has denied the allegations contained in Mr Blair's report. About 20 per cent of the world's uranium comes from the continent, with the DRC, Zambia, Niger, Namibia, Gabon, the Central African Republic and South Africa among the countries with significant deposits. The uranium used in the American bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 was mined at Mbuji Mayi in the DRC, in an area currently controlled by Zimbabwean troops. While Western intelligence agencies do not believe that the Iraqi leader has succeeded in buying significant quantities of uranium, it is however believed that Mayi-Mayi militia leaders in the DRC have visited Baghdad twice in recent years. Baghdad has denied the allegations contained in the report presented by Mr Blair. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
