" KORHOGO (AFP): Several thousand people demonstrated on Tuesday in Korhogo, in the north of Ivory Coast, to show their support for rebels who have held the town since an uprising nearly two weeks ago. Rebel soldiers joined the marchers and fired their rifles in the air to bolster the protesters, who chanted slogans against former colonial power France and Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo. "We don't want Gbagbo any more" said one banner. "We support the Ivory Coast rebellion," said another, while others warned French troops to leave the west African nation "... or else ... " An uprising on September 19 in the once stable west African nation, the world's leading cocoa producer, was apparently sparked by more than 700 soldiers demanding that a decision to demobilise them in December be rescinded. The rebels seized Korhogo along with Bouake on the day of the uprising, but it was crushed the same day in Abidjan at a cost of 270 dead and 300 wounded, by an official count. The rebels have since seized a string of towns in the north, and French troops have evacuated foreigners from Korhogo, nearby Ferkessedougou, and Bouake. The organisers of the march said they represented the young people of Korhogo. They declared the rebellion was purely internal and would not countenance any foreign military involvement. Residents in Bouake staged a similar march there last week after foreign correspondents arrived in the city just after French troops evacuated 170 children, most of them American, from a boarding school set up for the children of missionaries. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
