VILNIUS, Oct 1 (AFP) - The Lithuanian parliament agreed on Tuesday to send up to 40 Lithuanian soldiers to Afghanistan to participate in the US-led military operation there, the parliament's information bureau said. It said 65 Lithuanian lawmakers backed the decision, 21 voted against and eight abstained. The troops will go to Afghanistan for six months to provide special intelligence services for operations to oust the remnants of the former Taliban regime and the extremist al-Qaeda network. Lithuanian troops have been taking part in peacekeeping missions since 1994, three years after the country broke away from the former Soviet Union.
