http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A33135-2002Oct2.html [Almost a full year into the US's and its NATO allies' war against Afghanistan - its *lightening victory* in fact - 2,000 more Airborne Rangers are to be deployed near the border of US military dictator and coup maker Pervez Musharraf's Pakistan. All to shore up the US-installed *president* of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai, guarded closely by US bodyguards as his countrymen are eager to dispense with him, and his CIA-NSC handler Zalmay Khalilizad. But the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan natural gas pipeline is at long last underway and the US and its NATO allies Britain, Turkey, France, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Italy have troops, barracks, air bases, surveillance facilities and flyover rights in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan and Afghanistan. War on terrorism....] New Mission Launched in Afghanistan By Matt Kelley Associated Press Writer Wednesday, October 2, 2002; 1:35 PM WASHINGTON In a new operation that could involve up to 2,000 U.S. troops, Army soldiers are searching the mountains of southeastern Afghanistan for Taliban and al-Qaida fighters. The troops from the 82nd Airborne are part of a new strategy to use regular troops instead of elite special forces units to sweep remote areas of Afghanistan for enemy fighters and equipment, military officials say. The Army troops are combing an area of Afghanistan's Paktia province that borders Pakistan and has long been a focus of U.S. efforts to rid the country of members of the terrorist network and their Taliban allies. The region is near the town of Khost, in an area which has been the scene of clashes between rival warlords and scattered attacks on U.S. soldiers. Afghan President Hamid Karzai suggested during a visit to Qatar over the weekend that deposed Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar might be hiding along the Pakistani border. Army soldiers have questioned six suspects and uncovered several small caches of weapons during searches so far. The operation, dubbed "Alamo Sweep," is one of the largest in the war in Afghanistan and is expected to continue for at least several weeks. Military officials say having regular troops do the sweeps means a larger force can move in more quickly if Taliban or al-Qaida fighters are found. The troops are using Apache helicopter gunships and Blackhawk helicopters carrying troops to swoop into remote areas where enemy activity is suspected. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
