MELBORNE -- Hundreds of Australians gathered at a U.S. intelligence base
in the outback near Alice Springs on Saturday to protest against any war
with Iraq and Australia's alliance with the United States.
The demonstration by some 300 people outside the joint U.S.-Australian
Pine Gap base was mostly peaceful, although four were arrested after a
scuffle with police, a Northern Territory police spokeswoman said.
Two protesters had been arrested for carrying paint-filled balloons near
the satellite communications base, a police spokeswoman said.
Groups including the Anti-Bases Campaign Coalition, Medical Association
for Prevention of War, and Friends of the Earth Australia, bused people
in from across the country to take part in the protest.
Protesters were forced to leave cars and buses about two km (1 mile)
away from the desert base and walk to its gates on a blazing hot day to
show off their peace and anti-nuclear banners.
"They basically want to make themselves heard and have it understood
that they're against a war in Iraq, and they're against the U.S. using
our facilities for war," said Friends of the Earth nuclear weapons
spokeswoman Dimity Hawkins.
