AFP. 8 October 2002. Cuba remembers Che 35 years after his death. HAVANA -- Cuba paid homage Tuesday to President Fidel Castro's legendary partner in arms, Ernesto "Che" Guevara, marking the 35th anniversary of his death. Photos of the eternally young Che, who died in Bolivia at the age of 39, filled Cuban papers. Songs about Che and the few fragments of Guevara's speeches that were caught on tape saturated Cuban radio and television. "It's been 35 years since his life was taken by assassins in La Higuera (Bolivia), but a symbol that will never die was born that day. "Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, Che to the Cubans and fighters of the world continues today to gallop on his Rocinante, winning new battles," said an official statement. Thirty thousand people gathered there to mark the anniversary of his death Tuesday. And 135,000 Cuban children were solemnly made "Pioneers," receiving red or blue scarves, in an induction ceremony into the national youth organization. The organization's motto: "Pioneers for communism, we will be like Che." Cuban television was also expected to air two documentaries on Guevara: "Che in the new battlefields," and one narrated by Guevara's daughter Aleida Guevara, "Present Absence." . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
