Dear Friends,
I've just got off the phone with
aides of Illinois's two sentators, Dick Durbin (D) and
Peter Fitzgerald (R), and am convinced that the
potential exists for slowing down if not reversing the
current war drive.
Although the impending Senate vote on Iraq is being
presented as Senator Byrd of West Virginia vs the
world, this isn't necessarily the case; a real sense
exists, even among the US poltical elite, that there
isn't solid support in the hustings for the intended
war; that, unlike the war against Afghanistan, where
all regional powers in one manner or another supported
it, such is definitively not the case with the next
phase of the endless war and that, far from it, an
attack against Iraq could rapidly escalate into a
regional and perhaps global conflagration, with one
nuclear power in the immediate neighborhood and
another, major, one not far away.
So, please contact the offices of your state's two
senators and express your opposition to the use of any
military force against Iraq and its neighbors. Make
sure the person you speak with takes down your name,
phone number and mailing address to insure that they
know you expect accountability.
And then ask them for the Washington phone number for
the senator's chief legislative aide and/or foreign
policy adviser, whom you can then call and make your
point with.
Senators of both ruling parties can be moved - and
must be.
As bleak as matters may appear, sometimes a slight
thumb on the scale can tilt the balance.
