HEADLINE: ESTONIAN LABOR PARTY QUESTIONS COUNTRY'S NATO, EU GOALS

DATELINE: TALLINN, Oct 11

BODY:

The Social Democratic Labor Party doubts Estonia's accession to the present NATO, its leader said Friday.

"In the Labor Party's opinion, NATO is not the best way to secure Estonia's independence," Tiit Toomsalu said in an online interview with the daily Eesti Paevaleht Friday. In his words, the party would rather see Estonia together with Finland and Sweden as part of a Nordic nonaligned area guaranteed by NATO and Russia.

Estonia could join NATO after the alliance turns from an association directed against Russia into a global security organization, Toomsalu said.

The Labor Party's leader and sole representative in parliament also finds that Estonia should not aim at membership in the European Union.

"As an economic alternative (to the EU), I see the European Free Trade Association, through which Estonia would integrate into the European common economic space but preserve its political independence," he said in the interview with Eesti Paevaleht.

The EFTA includes at present four states -- Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
