AP. 28 February 2003. Thousands Rally in Manila Against War in Iraq. MANILA -- Thousands of Filipinos shouting anti-war slogans poured into a Manila park Friday to show their anger at a looming U.S.-led attack on Iraq and call for an end to a three-decade conflict with Muslim rebels at home. The crowd of priests, housewives, farmers, artists, leftists and students in school uniform dwarfed celebrations by about 600 people Tuesday marking the anniversary of a popular revolt that toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986. "I want my voice to be heard. I am against war," said Luz Landaos, a 51-year-old beautician, as she clutched the hand of her six-year-old granddaughter. "Stop the U.S. War in Iraq" some placards read, while others called for U.S. troops now training Philippine units near Manila and on the southern island of Mindanao to leave the country. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is a keen supporter of the U.S.-led war on terror but has said no Philippine troops will be sent to the Middle East and that any military action against Iraq must have the backing of the United Nations. But questions about the role of U.S. forces in Manila's war against four groups seeking an Islamic state in the south of the largely Roman Catholic country have exploded into controversy. One group of protesters targeted Arroyo, singing "Gloria, Gloria is going to war -- you're a liar, you're a liar."
