AP and Reuters. 28 February 2003. Thousands protest in Yemen and Egypt against war in Iraq. CAIRO -- Thousands of people marched in Yemen and Egypt on Friday, burning U.S. flags and effigies of President George W. Bush and demanding Washington scrap its plan to invade Iraq. In the southern Arabian Peninsula state of Yemen, about 6,000 people chanted anti-war slogans, burned an effigy of Bush and tried to march on the U.S. Embassy in San'a to protest a possible U.S.-led war in Iraq. During weekly Muslim mass prayers, clerics used their sermons to condemn America's perceived "arrogant policy" in the region. Chanting "Death to America! We are all human shields for Iraq," the protesters were prevented by security forces from reaching the U.S. Embassy. In Egypt, some 3,000 people staged a noisy protest outside Downtown Cairo's Al-Azhar mosque against American war plans in Iraq. Some urged Arab leaders to prevent a conflict or shouted: "Where are the Arab armies?" Others expressed a widespread Arab belief that Iraq is only the first step of a U.S. plan to dominate the region, chanting: "George Bush is a pirate of this age. After Iraq he will turn to Egypt." Anti-Western sentiment has been intensifying in the Middle East amid American and British threats to use force against Iraq to oust President Saddam Hussein. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
