Mr Aznar showed he was prepared to stand up to the US president with a blistering attack on Pentagon hawks. Mr Aznar admitted telling Mr Bush to rein in right-wing Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. He also called for Secretary of State Colin Powell to take over US policy on Iraq. Mr Aznar said: "I did tell President Bush that we need a lot of Powell and very little of Rumsfeld." The attack plunges the coalition of America, Britain, Italy and Spain into its first crisis since preparations for war began. But it bolstered Mr Aznar's standing in Spain, where a poll revealed 85 per cent would not back a war even with a second UN resolution. And last night - as Mr Blair flew to Madrid - the war coalition with other EU states looked shaky. Today, Mr Blair is holding a summit meeting with Mr Aznar and the pair are expected to plan a push to get UN backing for a second resolution.
