Anti-war movement enlists Aristophanes/'Lysistrata' to be read on
stages worldwide
by Steven Winn, Chronicle Arts and Culture Critic

In Athens, 2,400 years ago, women took the anti-war movement into
their own powerful hands. No sex, they told their mates, until the men
ended the Peloponnesian War. That's the subject of Aristophanes'
ancient Greek comedy "Lysistrata."

On Monday, in cities around the world, the story will be retold in
a global protest to the impending war with Iraq. More than 800 public
readings of "Lysistrata" are scheduled in 49 countries and scores of
communities across the United States. Lysistrata Project sites in the
Bay Area include San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Los Altos Hills and
Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton.

This "theatrical act of dissent" was first proposed in New York
early this year. New readings continue to swell the Web site list
(<http://www.lysistrataproject.com>).

The Bay Area's most ambitious undertaking is slated for the
Berkeley Repertory Roda Theatre at 6:30 and 9 p.m. Monday. Presented by
Upon These Boards, the reading will feature a cast of 100 actors and
the Sons & Daughters of Orpheus, a rhythm and drum ensemble. Cast
members include such prominent local actors as Marco Barricelli, Hector
Correa, Lorri Holt, Barbara Oliver and JoAnne Winter.

The "Lysistrata" reading isn't the only mass art protest planned.
Today, Rock Out Against War asks for artists and musicians to perform
simultaneously from 1 to 2 p.m. Locations can be anywhere, private or
public. For information, 800) 875-8884, <http://www.rockoutsf.org>.
