BUDAPEST, March 1 (AFP) - Hungary's defense minister on Saturday criticized the overflight of US military aircraft for a purpose other than authorized, calling it a violation of the country's sovereignty. "Hungary's sovereignty has been violated," Defense Minister Ferenc Juhasz told parliament's defense committee during an extraordinary session. In a letter sent Friday, the United States apologized for the February 20 flight of six US army helicopters and a tanker aircraft, supposed to be on their way to Afghanistan, to a military base in Constanta, Romania "to help ongoing US maneouvres there," Juhasz said. Hungary allowed the helicopters and the tanker plane to use Hungary's airspace and refuel at the Budapest Ferihegy civilian airport under authorisation formerly issued for Operation Enduring Freedom, which embraces international efforts for Afghanistan. According to the US apology, Washington itself originally thought that the aircraft were bound for Afghanistan, Juhasz said. Hungary has reacted with a "tough verbal note in which we asked the United States to avoid similar occurrences in the future," said Juhasz. Hungary, a NATO member since 1999, has approved the transit of US military equipment and troops for the defense of Turkey under last week's decision of NATO's Defence Planning Committee in a parliamentary vote on Monday.
