Bulgaria "Gets into NATO if Support for US Is
Preserved"

A Bulgarian government official told the BBC that the
country's ratification for NATO entry looks a sure
matter if Sofia preserves its support for the United
States.

According to Deputy Foreign Minister Lyubomir Todorov
in case Bulgaria continues to back the policies of the
US and NATO, it is unlikely for the country to stumble
over hurdles in the ratification process. To become a
part of the alliance in 2004 as planned, Bulgaria must
have its accession protocols signed by all nineteen
members and ratified by their parliaments. The
ratofication in US Senate is usua;lly regarded as the
most difficult to obtain.

Bulgaria's envoy to the United Nations said there was
no compromise looming in the Security Council on Iraq.

According to, US Secretary of State Colin Powell, nine
to ten countries that sit on the security watchdog
will back the draft resolution tabled by Washington,
London, Madrid. Many commentators say Bulgaria is a
stable supporter of the fresh resolution. However, the
country has not yet announced any position on the
issue.

Bulgaria does not rule out bilateral deal with USA on
bases

[Announcer] The question of the setting up of military
bases by NATO members on Bulgarian territory will be
placed on the agenda only after the country has become
a full member of the alliance, Foreign Ministry
spokesman Lyubomir Todorov said. Diyana Chepisheva has
filed this report:

[Chepisheva] Lyubomir Todorov explained that NATO
would probably apply a new concept regarding the
structuring of its military forces. It will reflect
the new threats and optimize the security system. We
will become part of this structure only when we become
members of NATO. We would then be able to propose the
deployment of foreign bases in Bulgaria, the Foreign
Ministry spokesman said. He went on to add that the
official practice was for NATO to ask its member for
the setting up of military bases on their territory.
Lyubomir Todorov explained that a bilateral agreement,
such as one on the setting up of US bases in Bulgaria,
was not very likely, but could not be ruled out
altogether....

Bush: Bulgarians Love America

"I know that many Europeans love America. For example
- Hungary, Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic,
Bulgaria," US President Bush said. Bulgaria is one of
the countries that have declared their pro-American
stance on Iraq.

US President Bush gave an interview for fourteen US
newspapers. Asked to comment the protests against war
in Iraq in Europe, Bush said that this did not mean
that all Europeans were anti-Americans.

He denied reports that the United States was spying on
delegates in the UN Security Council.
