AP. 5 March 2003. Anti-war activists launch nationwide signature
campaign to oppose pro-U.S. government stance.

MADRID -- A day after Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar's conservative
party backed his pro-U.S. stance against Iraq, anti-war activists
Wednesday launched a nationwide signature campaign to protest the
government's position.

With full-page advertisements in national dailies and campaign tables in
towns council and schools around the country, the Culture Against War
Platform is seeking millions of signatures in a bid to make Aznar change
his mind.

"We're hoping for at least 10 million signatures, the same number of
people who voted for Aznar in the last elections," said a spokeswoman
for the platform.

"We want the people to be consulted before anything is done in Spain's
name."

The start of the campaign coincided with the end of a student anti-war
demonstration in Madrid's central Puerta de Sol square where thousands
of young people marched behind a banner reading: "Not a single euro,
soldier or bullet for this war."

Politicians such as Socialist party spokesman Jesus Caldera and United
Left secretary general Gaspar Llamazares, as well as many entertainment
world figures, turned up at the square to express their support.

Spain witnessed some of the biggest anti-war demonstrations worldwide on
Feb. 15 with an estimated three million taking to the streets. Opinion
polls indicate some 80 percent of Spaniards oppose a war against Iraq
while the country's opposition parties are united in opposing Aznar's
stance.

On Tuesday, the 183 parliamentary deputies of Aznar's Popular Party and
one opposition member fell in behind the prime minister rejecting a
resolution that called for Spain to support more time for United Nation
weapon inspectors and oppose a second council resolution that would pave
the way for an attack.

"We had hoped that the Popular Party deputies would be democratic and
reflect the wishes of the people but no," said Llamazares. "They left
the Parliament (as if) dressed in khaki military uniform following their
leader."
